Blue Grass Airport and Fayette County Public Schools unveiled a snowplow blade painted by students from Lexington Middle School in a partnership that combined art, education, and aviation! During their visit to the airport, students also learned about winter maintenance operations and toured the snow removal equipment complex.

“We are always looking for ways to engage young people in aviation, and this project offered a unique way to bridge art with real-world airport operations,” said Eric Frankl, the airport’s president and CEO.

An eight-foot snowplow blade, normally used on roadways, had provided a manageable canvas for the nearly three dozen eighth graders. Also, they saw how this plow differs from the airport’s much larger winter equipment, used to clear more than 230 acres to ensure safe, efficient travel.

Titled “Hands That Dream,” the piece represents significant time and effort by Leo Jarmillo-Jones’ visual art students. It features colorful, floating hands to symbolize how the school community works together and celebrates its diversity. And with images of paper airplanes to express their goals, the students’ design illustrates how their dreams connect to their community.

The plow blade will be on display this winter in the airport’s upper atrium, just past the TSA security checkpoint, where thousands of holiday travelers will see it.

“Opportunities like this are truly invaluable. To see their creative spirit proudly showcased in one of the most visible centers of our city is an incredibly special moment,” said Principal Bryne Jacobs. “I am immensely proud of our scholars for their commitment, collaboration, and exceptional work.”
